This Day in History Entry #126
July 12th, 2011 by Wordsman
Steven Dahl had a quite clever scheme
To take down the whole Disco regime
Fans with records took aim
The outfield turned to flame
Let’s just say: ’twas a little . . . extreme
Event: “Disco Demolition Night”: a promotion gets out of hand and fans storm the field, leading the Chicago White Sox to forfeit the game to the Detroit Tigers, the last game forfeited in this way in the American League

In case the Wordman is not old enough to remember the 1970’s, I’ll just say that this event, while notable, seemed to fit the tenor of the times.
Also, the White Sox of the late 1970’s had maybe the wackiest TV announcing crew ever, Jimmy Piersall and Harry Caray. Piersall had had a movie made about his battles with mental illness (in which he was played by Anthony Perkins, of all people), and Harry was . . . well, Harry was everything that people said about him (including being a great announcer).
A Fan has extremely fond memories of watching Sox games on cable in this era (although I sadly did NOT see the disco game) and listening to Piersall rant and Harry get drunk.
The Good Old Days!

Nitpick: “the last game forfeited in this way in the American League”???
Were there any OTHER games forfeited in the American League due to disco demolition?
In the Naitonal League, maybe?
